Cthulhu is an alien being who waits dreaming on his island of R'lyeh at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Often depicted as huge, with an octopus-like head and bat wings, he calls to the unstable and the artistic in their dreams. This stark impression of Cthulhu was rendered in only a few red calligraphic brush strokes by an inmate of Arkham Sanitarium, on that stormy night in 1925 when R'lyeh briefly rose to the surface.
